Sonu Nigam has shared an emotional video on the passing of veteran singer Mohammed Aziz on Tuesday.

The singer-actor said it was one of the saddest days of his life.

Aziz died at the age of 64 after suffering a heart attack on his return to Mumbai from Kolkata.

“He was like my guru from whom I have learnt a lot," Nigam said in the video shared on his Facebook page. "And his voice used to do something to my heart every time. I am not able to believe that he passed away.

"I used to love him so much. When growing up, I used to listen to only his songs and try singing in his voice.”

The singer also said he did not get a chance to meet Mohammed Aziz much because he wasn’t so social. “But I remember calling him once when his song ‘Aaj Kal Yaad Kuchh’ was out. I told him, ‘Hats off for the work you have done. I have called you just to say this.’ Then he called me a number of times. He too used to love me a lot,” he said.

Nigam said he wished he could have spent more time with Mohammed Aziz. "I regret this from the inside," he said. "We become so busy in our work life that we are unable to meet our loved ones.”

Singers Kavita Krishnamurthy and Shaan and actors Jaaved Jaaferi and Naved Jafri also tweeted condolence messages for the departed singer. Jaaved Jaaferi recalled how Aziz sang the title song of his father Jagdeep’s movie Soorma Bhopali (1988).

Aziz gained popularity with the song ‘Mard Tangewala’ from Manmohan Desai’s Mard (1985). The song had also become synonymous with then superstar Amitabh Bachchan, on whom it was picturized.

Surprisingly, however, Bachchan hasn’t tweeted about it. Many other big names from Hindi cinema failed to say anything about Aziz's passing.
