Rajinikanth’s 2.0 beats Baahubali: To have widest release for an Indian film

All eyes are on the highly anticipated release of superstar Rajinikanth’s 2.0, currently dubbed as the most expensive Indian film ever made with a budget of Rs510 crore. As the film gears up to be released on 29 November, reports from reliable trade sources claim that 2.0 is set to have the widest release for an Indian film, surpassing even SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali: The Conclusion in screen count worldwide.

Last year, the Baahubali sequel released in nearly 9,500 screens in four languages and going by early estimates, 2.0 is slated to be released in around 10,500 screens. In India alone, the film is expected to release in around 7,850 screens.

Distributed Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions, the film is expected to be released in 5,000 screens in north India. In Telugu-speaking states, 2.0 is expected to capture 1,100 screens and majority of the theatres will play the Telugu version. In Tamil Nadu, the film will be released in around 850-900 screens, out of which nearly 350 screens will play the film in 3D format. It’s worth mentioning that 2.0 is the first Indian film to be shot entirely in 3D. In the states of Kerala and Karnataka, 2.0 will be released in a total of around 800 screens.

Directed by Shankar, 2.0 also stars Akshay Kumar, Amy Jackson and Sudhanshu Pandey in pivotal roles. The film marks Akshay's Tamil film debut and will be seen playing a negative role. He underwent heavy prosthetic makeover for his character in the film. Rajinikanth will return as scientist Vaseegaran, Chitti robot and 2.0, the upgraded version of Chitti. In a recent interview, Shankar revealed that there will also be a dwarf version of Rajinikanth’s robot character in the film.
