Chandra Prakash Dwivedi’s Mohalla Assi and Vinod Kapri’s Pihu had a dull run at the box office in their first weekend. The films managed to earn Rs1 crore and Rs1.50 crore, respectively, as per figures shared by Boxofficeindia.com.
On Friday, 16 November, Mohalla Assi, starring Sunny Deol and Sakshi Tanwar, opened with Rs30 lakh, while Pihu made Rs45 lakh. The next two days didn't show any improvement in the earnings of both films.
The uncensored version of Mohalla Assi, with a runtime of 150 minutes, was leaked online few years ago and was seen by quite a few netizens. This may have also affected the film’s numbers. Its censored version, which is released in theatres, is only 120 minutes long.
Hollywood movie Fantastic Beasts 2: The Crimes Of Grindelwald, which also released this week, earned way better than the two Hindi movies. The film, directed by David Yates, earned Rs11.65 crore in the first weekend.
Meanwhile, Vijay Krishna Acharya’s Thugs Of Hindostan slumped further in its second weekend, earning only Rs5.25 crore. The film, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Fatima Sana Shaikh and Katrina Kaif, has so far earned a total of Rs139.50 crore.
The cost of production of Thugs Of Hindostan is around Rs300 crore. The film is staring at huge loss at the box office.
The failure of Thugs Of Hindostan and the new Hindi films have helped the cause of Badhaai Ho, a holdover release. The film earned an impressive Rs4.75 crore in its fifth weekend. The film, starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Sanya Malhotra, has so far earned a total of Rs123.29 crore.
