The biggest celebrity global fashion show is here again and so is actress Priyanka Chopra to grace the red carpet at annual Met Gala. Chopra, who also wore designer Ralph Lauren at her gala debut last year, wowed the crowed with a sleek crimson velvet gown from their collection. The piece de resistance of her outfit was the intricate gold-embroidered hood. Her bespoke gown was hand-embroidered with Swarovski crystals and beadwork and took over 250 hours to complete.
The headpiece resembles a snood, a kind of a hairnet made of cloth, which was frequently worn by European women in the 19th century. Chopra capped off her look with with glittery golden make-up and clasped a dangling gold bracelet with a cross on it.
The theme to this year's gala is Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination and Chopra set heads turning alongside other popular fashionistas like Rihanna, Bella Hadid, Ariana Grande and Blake Lively, among others.
The actress stopped to speak to Vogue magazine on the red carpet and revealed the inspiration behind her evening gown. "It's a nod to the theme with Mother Mary, Madonna and the hood," she explained, adding that the embroidery on her outfit was done in India. "My two worlds are colliding," Chopra said, referring to her dual careers in India and the US.
The crimson velvet gown checked off all the boxes of the heavenly bodies theme without going overboard. Other attendees like actress Mindy Kaling either played it safe or went over-the-top like singer Lana Del Ray.
The US news media approved of Chopra's look as both E! News and Variety gave her Ralph Lauren gown a thumbs up.
