Given the intense storyline, the songs of Raazi will largely hinge on the situations that Sehmat (Alia Bhatt) and other characters in the film find themselves in.
Kashmiri girl Sehmat obeys the orders of her father, Hidayat (Rajit Kapur), who gets her married to a Pakistani soldier Iqbal (Vicky Kaushal) so that she can spy in enemy territory.
While she trains well and hard for the job, Sehmat cannot succeed until she is completely convinced. And this conviction needs to come from the heart. The Raazi title track underlines this very predicament.
While the song, poster and trailer, released earlier, show Sehmat as a nervous girl in training, this song has her on ground zero, doing some commendable spying.
Gulzar has penned neat, defining lyrics that go perfectly well with the situation and task at hand.
Watch every step, keep your eyes, ears open — Gulzar brings out the task of a spy in a poetic way, especially in the antara. The lyrics are backed by an intense and gripping score by music composers, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy.
Much of the credit for the song though should go to singer Arijit Singh, who brings Sehmat's conviction alive.
While the mukhda of the song elevates to a higher pitch, the antara is restrained. Keeping with the expectations, not only does Singh give a perfect performance, he also seems to be enjoying the melody.
All and all, we have an another inspirational track from Raazi.
The film, directed by Mehgna Gulzar, is set to be released on 11 May.
