Jisshu Sengupta to reprise role of Chaitanya in Srijit Mukherji's Gouranga Itikata

Actor Jisshu Sengupta will reprise the role of 15th century spiritual leader Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in Srijit Mukherji’s next venture, Gouranga Itikata. Since Jatiswar (2014), the film is going to be the ninth collaboration between the director and the actor.

“I decide on the cast of a film as they fit into the characters and I have chosen Jisshu as, I think, he will be easily accepted by the audience in the role,” said Mukherji.

“Gouranga Itikata is being directed by Srijit  — a reason enough for me to be a part of the project. Besides, I am quite nostalgic about the character as well,” said Sengupta, who commenced his acting career with his small screen appearance as the same character and instantly turned into a household name.

Mukherji will also direct a script not written by him for the first time with the film. Produced by Rana Sarkar, the script of the film is being written by Shibashish Bandopadadhyay.

“I wanted to make a film on Nati Binodini with Rana, however, I am yet to pick the actress who can fit the role. Rana then advised me to work on Chaitanya, on who he has immense knowledge. The anecdotes on Chaitanya, besides his social and devotional works, fascinated me a great deal and prompted me to lay my hands on the project,” elaborated the director to AnandaPlus, a  section of Anandabazar Patrika.

The film will mostly be shot in Puri as the director intends to lend a period look to the film. Music will also play an important role in it.

The shooting of the film will begin this winter. Like Jatiswar and Chotushkone (2014), Mukherji is hopeful that his third collaboration with Sarkar will bring him accolades as well.
