Director Gajendra Ahire brings to the big screen in Pimpal the tale of many a senior citizen today. Few Indian films prop up seniors as protagonists. This is one of them.
Veteran Marathi actor Dilip Prabhavalkar plays Arvind, a septuagenarian who battles loneliness as he lives in a virtual world, always in touch with his family abroad through satellite but not feelings.
Arvind's condition will resonate with a large section of the urban Indian population that is either battling the empty nest syndrome or knows someone who does.
Arvind's interactions are limited to his doctor (played by Priya Bapat), who is also his companion during his morning stroll, and his Man Friday (played by Kishore Kadam).
Here's why you should not miss Pimpal:
1. Dilip Prabhavalkar
The veteran delivers a masterclass in acting. As the protagonist, carrying the film on his frail shoulders, he wins your heart with a sensitive and realistic portrayal of hoary life.
2. The writing
Director Ahire is a poet at heart. His analogies and metaphors run wide and deep, just like the roots of a mighty peepul tree.
3. Visuals
Krishna Kumar Soren’s camerawork presents a picture-perfect postcard. Outdoor and indoor scenes are shot with rare sensitivity never to overshadow the protagonist's struggle.

Pimpal is scheduled to be screened at the Habitat Film Festival at New Delhi's India Habitat Centre on Thursday 24 May 2018 at 6:30 pm.
