After a long time, a bidaai song has been featured prominently in a Hindi film. These kind of bidaai songs were frequently used during the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, where a daughter had to say goodbye to her family and home. In Meghna Gulzar's upcoming film, Raazi (2018), the song 'Dilbaro' holds significant meaning.
Alia Bhatt's character, Sehmat, a young Kashmiri girl marries a Pakistani man, Iqbal Syed (Vicky Kaushal) and becomes a spy for India. It is under the behest of her father, Hidayat (Rajit Kapur) that she undertakes this step. A new video shows the making of song, how it was shot in Kashmir and recorded in the studio.
Meghna Gulzar says in the featurette, "When you look at the next layer, where it's about this girl crossing the border and it's the father who's made this decision for her, the song takes on a whole other meaning."
Incidentally, her father, Gulzar, has written the lyrics for the song. Music composers Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy note their relationship on the film, as father-daughter and as lyricist-director.
The emotional song has elements of Kashmiri folk in it and has been sung by Harshdeep Kaur and Vibha Saraf. The song follow's Sehmat's journey from Kashmir to Pakistan.
While it is interesting to watch on screen, Bhatt and Kaushal said they had to wear the wedding finery for a long time. Kaushal said there is hours of footage which could become another film, while Bhatt said she wore her wedding sari at least 175 times!
Raazi is due to be released on 11 May 2018.
