National Award winning filmmaker Srijit Mukherji is set to take late filmmaker Satyajit Ray to a new medium — internet.
Mukherji, in association with Viacom International, will make a 12-part web-series based on the Academy Award-winning filmmaker's short stories. Titled X-Ray: Selected Satayajit Shorts, the series will be produced by Viacom's digital content brand, Tipping Point.
The announcement comes on the 97th birth anniversary (he was born on 2 May 1921) of the filmmaking legend.
Speaking to Bombay Times, a daily supplement, Mukherji said, "One aspect of Satyajit Ray, which probably gets overshadowed by his cinematic genius, is his remarkable treasure trove of short stories, which an entire generation grew up on. These stories appeared in groups of 12, across years, and covered diverse genres like horror, drama, satire, etc. It is an honour to get an opportunity to adapt 12 such stories for the web-series."
This is not the first time Ray's stories have found their way to the digital platform. Recently, Sujoy Ghosh directed Anukul, a short film based on Ray's story. The short starred Saurabh Shukla and Parambrata Chatterjee.
Ray is considered one of India's greatest filmmakers. His Apu Trilogy [Pather Panchali (1955), Aparajito (1956) and Apur Sansar (1959)] earned him the respect of filmmakers from across the world. The filmmaker was presented with an honorary Oscar by the Academy of Motion Pictures Art and Sciences in 1992, justs a few months before he passed away.
