Love, lust, fidelity and friendships collide to shape modern relationships in Lust Stories trailer

"You cannot hurt someone you don't love," declares Radhika Apte's character in the opening to the trailer of Netflix's, Lust Stories. The first trailer to the anthology of four films, directed by Karan Johar, Zoya Akhtar, Dibakar Banerjee and Anurag Kashyap, was released today, and captures the different shades of love and relationships from the contemporary perspective. 

Johar tells the story of a young urban couple, played by Vicky Kaushal and Kiara Advani, struggling to come to terms with their new marriage. Advani plays the new bride looking to break free from the conservative set-up that she lived in, through her new marriage. Except, the new household is just as closed up, and she and her new husband struggle to find their own space.  

Kashyap's short captures Apte and Sairat (2015) star Akash Thosar exploring another side of lust as the older teacher and younger student, respectively. Apte is pitch perfect as she portrays the alluring non-confirmative woman in a marriage with a man whose best idea of a relationship is the kind penguins have. No wonder, she chooses to keep her options open. However, she has a cynical approach to it that makes it difficult for her to sustain any relationship.

Banerjee chooses to pursue a traditional love triangle between a married couple Sanjay Kapoor, Manisha Koirala, and their best friend, Jaideep Ahlawat. Unknown to Kapoor's cuckolded husband, Ahlawat and Koirala carry on an affair. Kapoor continues to confide about it in Ahlawat's character. 

Akhtar adds a touch of class to her love story, as Sudha (Bhumi Pednekar), a house maid finds herself in love with Ajit (Neil Bhoopalam), the young brother of a homeowner she works for. When Ajit's marriage is confirmed, Sudha finds herself coming to terms with the class divide that will never allow her love to be requited.

The film will also see Neha Dhupia and Rasika Dugal play important roles in different stories.

The trailer shows a touch of class and a wonderful diversity in the narrative styles of the directors. Sharply cut, and backed by an intriguing background score, it promises a very entertaining product that might match, if not outperform the previous anthology, Bombay Talkies (2013). With a brilliant cast of directors and actors, the trailer delivers the first impact of an impressive collection of tales. 

The anthology will be premiered on Netflix on 15 June.
