Superstar Aamir Khan and Sairat (2016) director Nagraj Popatrao Manjule will attend the 700th show of the critically acclaimed Marathi play, Shivaji Underground In Bhimnagar Mohalla. The show will be staged on 21 May in Mumbai’s Yashwantrao Natyagruha.
Khan has been venturing in Marathi audio-visual content and recently produced a TV show, Toofan Aalaya, aimed at creating awareness on the problems of drought in rural India.
Shivaji Underground In Bhimnagar Mohalla is written by Rajkumar Tangde and directed by Nandu Madhav who played Dadasaheb Phalke in Harishchandrachi Factory (2010), India's official entry for the Academy Awards.
The cast of the play includes Kailash Waghmare [of Half Ticket (2016)], Meenakshi Rathod, Sambhaji Tangde, Pravin Dalimbkar, and others.
The play depicts how Shivaji Maharaj’s name is used by the political class to further their personal interests. It was initially mirred in controversy due to its subject with Madhav even receiving death threats from quite a few right wing groups.
“Completing 700 shows is an achievement for any play. This is the result of the sheer hard work put in by the team. And to see sensible artists like Aamir Khan and Nagraj Manjule attending the show gives us special happiness,” said the producer of the play Bhagwan Medankar.
