Parmanu trailer: John Abraham has a potential winner up his sleeve

With the legal trouble behind, John Abraham Entertainment is gearing to get Parmanu: The Story Of Pokhran released. John Abraham Entertainment, Zee Studios and Kyta Productions released the trailer of the film today, and it is impressive.

All along, we’ve know that the film is based on India's nuclear bomb tests in Pokhran in 1998 under the Pokhran-II mission. What we didn't know is the circumstances and the manner in which the five nuclear tests were conducted by India at the Indian Army's Pokhran Test Range in May 1998.

Director Abhishek Sharma’s Parmanu will unwrap the story behind the successful undertaking of these tests. However, in all probability, the real identities of the heroes will not be revealed.

The trailer begins in a cliched way that introduces your hero, captain Ashwat Raina, (played by John Abraham) as a kick-ass army officer. You wouldn’t expect for such a subject to have the regular Bond-style combat, but then there you are.

While it is to be seen how the film fares, John Abraham impresses as the captain in the trailer. Diana Penty will be seen as captain Ambalika, while Boman Irani’s character appears to be the brain behind the mission.

Raina, Ambalika and four other officers masquerade as Archaeology Survey of India officers and carry out their mission in the remote village of Pokhran, Rajasthan.

It is remarkable how India managed to hide the Pokhran-II nuclear tests from the world, particularly, from the United States of America, who later led the charge of imposing sanctions against India. The then US government, led by Bill Clinton, condemned India and wanted it to sign the controversial Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. However, the then Indian prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and his government didn’t budge under America's pressure and went ahead with the task.

One hopes the film also mentions late Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, who was then an aerospace engineer and under whom the missile programme was launched.

Overall, Sharma has carved out a gripping trailer that’s laced with intent, action, patriotism, and a few punch lines.

The film is set to be released on 25 May.
