The Academy pays tribute to Shashi Kapoor and Sridevi at the 90th Oscar ceremony

The 90th Academy awards ceremony held in Los Angeles paid tribute to Shashi Kapoor and Sridevi in its In Memoriam section.

The artistes were included among fellow giants of cinema like Sam Shepard, Martin Landau, Roger Moore and Jerry Lewis. 

Shashi Kapoor died on 4 December 2017 while Sridevi's recent demise on 24 February arrived as a shock to the Indian film industry. The addition of these artistes to the list is a tribute to their contribution to cinema as well as to Indian cinema's growing presence on the global stage. 

At the 2017 Oscars, Om Puri had also received a tribute in the same section.

Even actress Vidya Balan woke up to the news of her favourite artiste receiving a salute by Hollywood. 

Kapoor is best remembered in the West for his collaborations with James Ivory and Ismail Merchant in films like The Householder (1963), Shakespeare Wallah (1965) and Heat And Dust (1983).

Incidentally, Kapoor's long-time collaborator James Ivory, at 90 years of age, became the oldest Academy award winner, receiving the trophy for Best Adapted Screenplay for his latest work, Call Me By Your Name (2017). 

Sridevi's death from accidental drowning in Dubai on 24 February arrived as a shock to the Indian film industry. The versatile actress who rose to become a star in South Indian and, later, Hindi cinema, was 54. Her filmography runs up to 300 films in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Hindi and Kannada. 

Pearl Jam lead singer Eddie Vedder paid tribute to those mentioned with a rendition of writer-singer Tom Petty's song, Room At The Top. Petty died in October last year.
