The much awaited teaser of Rajinikanth's Kaala was released at the intervening midnight of Thursday and Friday by the film's producer, actor Dhanush.

The teaser was released about 10 hours ahead of schedule. Despite that, it went viral with over 3.7 million views in a matter of just 12 hours.

The teaser, which was earlier supposed to be released on Thursday, was postponed by a day as a mark of respect to Jayendra Saraswati, the shankaracharya of the Kanchi mutt, who died the day before.

In the teaser, Rajinikanth appears as Kaala, a don, speaking the Tirunelveli dialect of Tamil. The film, directed by Pa Ranjith, sends out a strong but veiled message against racism as Rajini defines the meaning of black even as the film's villain, played by Nana Patekar, overemphasizes the significance of the colour white.

The teaser begins with Patekar asking, "Kaala! What sort of a name is this?" In reply, we have the meaning of black being explained in the teaser.

"Kaala means black. It refers to Karikaalan, the god of death. Someone who fights to protect," we hear actor Samuthirakani say in the background.

Patekar says, "I want to make this country clean and pure," indicating he wants to get rid of everything that is black.

In response, Rajini as Kaala says, "Black is the colour of the proletariat. Come and see in my chawls. Dust scatters into a rainbow."

It is clear that Pa Ranjith, who is known to have strong leftist leanings and directed Rajini's previous release Kabali (2016), has a strong message to drive home with this film too.

The teaser ends with Rajini saying, "You haven't seen the extreme ends of my rowdyism, right? You will see!"

Here's the teaser if you still haven't seen it.
