In August 2017, the news broke that Sushant Singh Rajput had dropped out of Romeo Akbar Walter. The film, directed by Robbie Grewal, is a spy thriller, and will now feature John Abraham in place of Rajput.

Abraham put up a tweet announcing his official entry into the film. While Abraham did not write anything, the picture of the clapboard with the title is a clear indication that the actor will now be replacing Rajput as the lead of the film.

Producer Ajay Kapoor also confirmed the news, saying, "We are excited to have John on board this film with us. The process began when we were brainstorming on whom to cast for the protagonist’s part and thought that John would fit the bill perfectly. He really liked the script and gave his nod on the same day as the narration. We have revisited the script of this espionage-drama which is set in the 1970s and we can’t wait to take it on the floors."

Rajput had pulled out of the film citing lack of time. The actor is currently involved in three projects namely, Abhishek Chaubey's Sonchiriya, Sara Ali Khan's debut Kedarnath, and the space drama, Chanda Mama Door Ke.

Abraham is also awaiting the release of Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran, and has also begun shooting for Milap Zaveri's next cop thriller.
