Toilet: Ek Prem Katha gets fifth-highest opening for Indian film at Chinese box office

The film, starring Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar, opened on 8 June in China as Toilet Hero in Mandarin.

Director Shree Narayan Singh’s first film Toilet: Ek Prem Katha (2017) turned out to be one of the most successful films of last year when it released in India. Now, the film has started off well at the Chinese box office.

The film, starring Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar, was retitled as Toilet Hero for the local audience and releaed in Chian on 8 June. As per figures shared by Boxofficeindia.com, the film opened earning $2.32 million, Rs15.70 crore approximately.

This is the fifth-highest opening for an Indian film in China. The first four in the list are Secret Superstar (2017), Hindi Medium (2017), Dangal (2016) and Baahubali: The Conclusion (2017) which earned $6.81 million, $3.34 million, $2.49 million and $2.44 million, respectively. Secret Superstar is way ahead of others as the film had become a rage, more so because Aamir Khan is a big star in the Middle Kingdom.

The number earned in China by Toilet: Ek Prem Katha is just slightly more than Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015), which made $2.25 million. But we should take note of the fact that Toilet: Ek Prem Katha had approximately 55,718 screenings while the Salman Khan-film had approximately 20,302 screenings.
