Hindi cinema has had a deep connection with Peshawar since its conception. From Hindi film legends Prithviraj Kapoor to Dilip Kumar, some of the greatest legends of Indian cinema trace their roots back to the city. Shah Rukh Khan's cousin might just make this connection a lot stronger.
Noor Jehan, the actor's paternal cousin, is set to contest the general assembly elections in the city of Peshawar. She will be running for a Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa assembly seat from PK-77 constituency as an independent candidate.
Jehan and her family reside in the Shah Wali Qataal area, close to the fabled Qissa Khwani Bazaar (where Dilip Kumar traces his roots too). The family visited Khan before, and have maintained close contact with the actor.
The Pakistani website, Tribune.com (The Express Tribune), quoted Jehan's brother, Mansoor as saying, "We have a political legacy attached to the family." The family was reportedly part of the Khuda-i-Khidmatgar movement led by Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan before the Independence and Partition of India.
Noor Jehan had previously served as councillor and has been active in politics.
