Karnataka high court stands by Kaala, says state must offer security to theatres

The Karnataka high court, while refusing to intervene in the issue, directed the lawyers representing the makers of Kaala, to provide a list of theatres where the film will be screened in the state. The court suggested that the state is duty bound to offer protection to these theatres for the screening of the film, in view of potential threats. 

The makers of the film had approached the Karnataka high court to overturn a ban against the Kaala, starring Rajinikanth, by the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC). The KFCC had acted against the film in view of Rajinikanth's recent comments on the controversial Cauvery water issue.

While the film is scheduled to be released on 7 June across Tamil Nadu, the KFCC had stated that Kaala would neither be released nor distributed in Karnataka. However, Wunderbar Films' Dhanush and wife Aishwarya petitioned the court stating that it is the fundamental right of the makers to exihibit the film on receiving certification from the Central Board of Film Certification.
