Box office: Veere Di Wedding hits the mark with Rs35 crore opening weekend

The content and free-spirit of the film seems to have appealed to the young urban woman demographic, resulting in a steady collection at the box office over the three day weekend.

Shashanka Ghosh's Veere Di Wedding is going from strength to strength. Its record opening of Rs10.75 crore on Friday (1 June), was only a marker of how the audiences in urban metros have embraced the film. At the end of the weekend, the Kareena Kapoor Khan, Sonam K Ahuja, Swara Bhasker and Shikha Talsania-led film has collected a stunning Rs35 crore, according to Boxofficeindia.com.

The film's weekend collection now exceeds the earnings of other female-led films like Raazi (Rs32 crore), and Mary Kom (2014) (Rs29.88 crore). The film has outshot Raazi's opening weekend collection of Rs32 crore, despite its adult rated certification. The certification has not deterred the urban female demographic from improving the film's box office collections. While it might not see similar collections among the core Hindi film audiences in non-metro regions, the film has little to worry considering the sparse competition in the coming week.

Shashanka Ghosh's film saw an opening day record collection of Rs10.75 crore, which is the third biggest opening of 2018 after Baaghi 2 and Padmaavat. It is also more than Akshay Kumar's Pad Man, which opened with Rs9.81 crore at the box office.

The collection seems to echo trade analyst Atul Mohan's statement to us, about the film managing to touch a chord among the urban youth. Predicting a '30 crore plus' collection, Mohan had said, "This is something new. Moving forward from Lipstick Under My Burkha (2016), breaking the conservative stereotypes. While this has brought some family audience, it is the youngsters who are enjoying the most."

The film saw an increase in collection over the weekend. It collected Rs11.50 crore on Saturday (3 June), and Rs12.75 crore on Sunday (4 June), taking the total to Rs35 crore.

The other film of the week, Bhavesh Joshi Superhero, seems to have ended up with the poorer returns of Rs90-95 lakh. The film is unlikely to see a boost over the week, considering the rate at which its competition is growing.

Meanwhile, Parmanu: The Story Of Pokhran, starring John Abraham and Diana Penty, saw additions made to its first week collections. The film has now managed Rs44.50 crore at the box office over two weeks. Pokhran earned Rs2.25 crore on Friday (1 June), Rs3.25 crore on Saturday (2 June), and Rs4.25 crore on Sunday (3 June), according to Boxofficeindia.com.

With a budget of Rs44 crore (estimated), the film has broken even in its second week. It is now left to be seen if it will manage to sustain on this growth.

Meghna Gulzar's Raazi is slowly inching towards the Rs120 crore mark, having touched Rs113.50 crore in its fourth weekend. The film started off bullishly in its first week, but has seen its progress slow down considerably.
