The makers of Soorma have released the song 'Good Man Di Laaltain', penned by Gulzar. Known for his immaculate Urdu lyrics, the song sees a departure from Gulzar's otherwise signature style. While the lyrics are in Punjabi, it would be best for speakers of the language to judge the song.
The phrase Good Man Di Laaltain borrows from the legend of the blind man carrying a lantern (laaltein in Hindi) as he walked through the forest. It is popularly used in North India.
Soorma Anthem: Gulzar, Shankar Mahadevan bring out Sandeep Singh's true grit
According to the legend, people looked at him bemused as he walked by every night, as they realised he did not benefit from the light he was carrying. When approached and asked why, the blind man responded, 'The lantern is for others to see in darkness. It is for those who would otherwise be lost'.
The significance of the song in the scheme of things is difficult to pinpoint due to the Punjabi lyrics. The setting seems to be a wedding or celebration of some kind. We presume that Gulzar has compared the hockey player Sandeep Singh (played by Diljit Dosanjh) to the good man from the old saying.
The music composer trio of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy use a groovy pop score to Gulzar's words. The music is upbeat, and the choreography seems to deliberately clumsy as the lead characters are sportpersons, not professional dancers.

The song comes alive through the powerful of voice of Sukhwinder Singh. Sunidhi Chauhan compliments Sukhwinder with an energetic performance of her own.
