While the first two songs from Rajkumar Hirani's Sanju — 'Main Bhi Badhiya' and 'Kar Har Maidaan Fateh' — have the element of quirk and melody, the third song is one that has AR Rahman written all over it. The 'Ruby Ruby' song has an entrancing rhythm that captures the wild, pulsing beats of an artist in search of his muse. The song is sung by Shashwat Singh and Poorvi Koutish.
'Ruby Ruby' sets the rhythm template with its combination of electric and bass guitars. The signature element sets up the slow, trance-like tempo of the song before Singh's husky vocals fade in. The song is hoisted on the back of some subtle and effective percussions that back up the trippy vocals. Koutish's voice brings in a haunting facet to the composition, contributing to the trance-like feel of the song.
Rahman sprinkles several elements of his usual influences, from RD Burman to Arabian rock, and adds heft to the entire composition. The lyrics by Irshad Kamil are again very trippy and roll off the tongue with ease. The symbolism in the song plays to the theme of a drug addled lover-boy in search of his mysterious muse.
The trailer of the film had a moment with Ranbir Kapoor's Sanju scribbling Ruby onto a phone booth window. The song seems to imply his search for that very dream girl, while he is lost unto drugs.
Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, the film also stars Dia Mirza, Anushka Sharma, Sonam Kapoor, Paresh Rawal and Vicky Kaushal. The film is set to be released on 29 June.
