Earlier, actor Abhishek Bachchan was reported to star as Aisha's father, opposite Chopra as the mother. However, it seems Bachchan has backed out of the project and Akhtar will replace him instead.
Actress Priyanka Chopra is set to reunite with her Don (2006) and Don 2 (2006) director, Akhtar, for the yet untitled project by filmmaker Shonali Bose. Chopra and Akhtar played love interests in Zoya Akhtar's Dil Dhadakne Do (2015) and are now set to play husband and wife in the upcoming film.
Bose's film is based on the true story of Aisha Choudhary who suffered from an immune deficiency disorder at a young age and died at 18. Actress Zaira Wasim, known for her performances in Dangal (2016) and Secret Superstar (2017), is said to be playing Aisha. The young actress won a National Award for Best Supporting Actress in Dangal (2016).
Aisha Choudhary became a motivational speaker after her diagnosis and spoke at conferences like INK 2013 and at TEDx Pune. She also wrote a book, My Little Epiphanies, an account of her experiences. After her death in January 2015, her parents Niren and Aditi have taken up their late daughter's cause.
The film is to be co-produced by Ronnie Screwvala and Siddharth Roy Kapur. An official announcement seems imminent as lead actress Chopra is currently in Mumbai. She will also begin shooting for Ali Abbas Zafar's Bharat (2019), opposite actor Salman Khan, some time this year.
