After successful screenings all over the US, from New York to Los Angeles, Gali Guleiyan (also known as In The Shadows) makes its way to Europe. The film’s lead actor, Manoj Bajpayee won the best actor award for his performance at the New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF) in May this year.
In In The Shadows, directed by Dipesh Jain, Bajpayee plays a Delhi shopkeeper who mostly keeps to himself. He hears the son of his neighbour being abused by his father and feels the need to intervene. The rest of the cast includes Shahana Goswami, Neeraj Kabi, Ranvir Shorey, Ashwath Bhatt, Arbaaz Khan and child actor Om Singh.
Jain, a first-time filmmaker from Los Angeles, has won the Director’s Guild Of America (DGA) Student Award. In The Shadows was shot on location in Delhi, India and had its screening on 20 June at the Indian Film Festival of Stuttgart where it is in competition.
In The Shadows review: Less of a psychological thriller, more of an emotional journey
The film will have its UK premiere at the London Indian Film Festival on 22 June and its European premiere on 29 June at the Filmfest Munchen (Munich International Film Festival). It is competing at CineVision Competition section which selects fresh films directed by fresh talent. Other Indian films Ashwatthama, No Bed Of Roses, and Village Rockstars will also be screened at the Munich film festival.
Jain’s debut has travelled to around 18 international film festivals around the world after premiering at the Busan International Film Festival last October. Back in India, it won the Grand Jury award at 19th Mumbai Film Festival when it had its Indian premiere.
