Lata Mangeshkar pens long post slamming trend of remixes 

It is not often that veteran singer Lata Mangeshkar expresses her opinions, but when she does, everybody listens. The octogenarian has expressed deep concern over the trend of remixing classic songs. Mangeshkar had a telephonic conversation with writer-lyricist Javed Akhtar. She then proceeded to write her views in a long post on Twitter.

“For some time I have been seeing that songs related to the Golden Age are being remade in a new way – through remix.  It is said that this song is becoming popular with youth [sic],” Mangeshkar wrote.

While she wasn’t entirely against remakes per se, she wants music composers to maintain the original form of the song.

"Maintaining the original form of the song is a good idea to present it in new surroundings. As an artist, I also believe that many songs have tunes that every artist thinks that given a chance, they too would like to feel it but to distort it is completely wrong. I’ve heard that is what is happening today [sic]," she wrote further.

“Distorting the original tune of the song, making changes in words, or adding new and cheap words, when I see that happened I feel pained [sic]," added the singer, who was conferred Bharat Ratna in 2011, India's highest civilian honour.

The legendary singer had this advice for music composers: "It is a good idea to present the song in its original form. By doing so, the beauty of the original song and its meaning will be sustained. The new generation will surely like such songs.”

“I believe that the record of keeping the purity of Hindi cinema and the ability to solve this problem properly is the responsibility of the recording companies but the sadness is that companies have forgotten it. These companies should fulfill their responsibility to music, instead of commercially looking at the cultural heritage of the country, it is my humble request to them [sic],” concluded Mangeshkar.
