Lyricist Gulzar pleased the audience with his songs in Meghna Gulzar's Raazi (2018). The veteran writer-filmmaker has now penned a romantic number for the sports biopic, Soorma, based on the life of Indian hockey player Sandeep Singh.
The 'Ishq Di Baajiyaan'song from the film catches the fine, sweet and chivalrous moments between Sandeep (Diljit Dosanjh) and Harpreet (Taapsee Pannu).
Coffee dates and gifts may be in vogue but some times just singing a song for the loved one is enough to win a heart. Sandeep’s affection for Harpreet doesn’t please their coach who gives the young man a real hard hockey training laced with corporal punishment.
Dosanjh and Pannu are Sikh themselves and look perfect as Sandeep and Harpreet.
The lyrics by Gulzar are simple and merely state that there are no winners or losers in the game of love.
The song is gripping, but ends abruptly. It is almost as if the makers have presented a half-baked piece just to leave you craving for more. Times like these make one wonder why music composers fall prey to the commercial demands of limiting the length of songs.
Composers Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy provide a soft, endearing score. The music gradually builds with the antara lifting one's mood.
You can’t really find fault with Dosanjh’s singing. 'Ishq Di Baajiyaan' will rank among the top romantic songs crooned by the singer-actor. Dosanjh is a delight to watch and listen to in this track. Though brief, the additional vocal by Shankar Mahadeven pleases the ears too.
Soorma is set to be released on 13 July.
