Dismissing media reports that claimed Tamil film Kaala had incurred huge losses, the makers of the film, Dhanush’s Wunderbar Films, took to Twitter to inform that the film has been a ‘successful and profitable’ project for them.

“We would like to dispel rumours run in a few articles on #Kaala. Contrary to it, #Kaala is a successful  and profitable project for Wunderbar Films and we thank Superstar for the opportunity given to us. We also thank the audience for the positive response given to the film,” the production house wrote on its official Twitter handle.

Kaala, starring Rajinikanth and Nana Patekar, was released a month ago on 7 June.

Directed by Pa Ranjith, the film released in 2,926 screens the world over. In North India alone, the film released in 1,413 screens. In Tamil Nadu, the film released in 720 screens while in the neighbouring state of Kerala, it released in 243 screens. The figures for Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh were 150 and 400 screens, respectively.

The film, which the producers claim was made on a lavish budget, is believed to have cost Rs120 to Rs140 crores.

Despite the hype created around it, Kaala opened to mixed reviews and received a lukewarm response at the box office. However, the production house kept insisting that the film was doing well.

Reports also emerged that the distributors of the film had suffered huge losses and producer Dhanush had agreed to pay a sum of Rs40 crores to cover it.
