After crossing Rs100 crore in its first weekend, director Rajkumar Hirani’s biopic on actor Sanjay Dutt, titled Sanju, showed a downward trend in collections at the domestic box office in the end of the first week.
The film, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Vicky Kaushal, Manisha Koirala and Paresh Rawal, might not have a very promising second week afterall.
Sanju review: Ranbir Kapoor is the soul of this cleverly written narrative
However, the earnings of the second weekend were not disappointing. Sanju earned Rs12.50 crore on Friday (6 July), Rs21.25 crore on Saturday (7 July) and Rs28 crore on Sunday (8 July). The film’s total second weekend collection is Rs61.75 crore.
The grand total of the film now stands at Rs261.83 crore. Needless to say, the film, made at an estimated budget of Rs100 crore, is looking to enter the coveted Rs300 crore club.
PK (2014), starring Aamir Khan and Anushka Sharma, remains to be Hirani’s biggest blockbuster till date. The film earned a total of Rs337.72 crore. If Sanju holds well in its third weekend, it might manage cross PK's total earnings.
Sanju will not see a tough competition in its third weekend as the only notable Hindi film scheduled to be released come Friday (13 July) is Shaad Ali's biopic on Indian hockey player Sandeep Singh, titled Soorma.
Dangal review: Aamir Khan and his daughters score a win
Nitesh Tiwari's Dangal, starring Aamir Khan, currently holds the record of the highest grossing Hindi film with Rs374.53 crore. Achieving this target looks like a long way for Sanju.
