The sequel to Karan Johar’s 2012 film was originally supposed to hit the screens on 23 November 2018.

The introduction of two new students in Student Of The Year 2 – namely actresses Ananya Pandey and Tara Sutaria – will have to wait. The sequel, directed by Punit Malhotra, has been pushed out of a busy November 2018 to next year and will now be released on 10 May 2019.
The decision to move the film, starring the newcomers and actor Tiger Shroff, seems wise as the sequel to Karan Johar’s 2012 film would be going up against Yash Raj Films’ Thugs of Hindostan (2018), starring Aamir Khan, Amitabh Bachchan and Katrina Kaif, and S Shankar’s 2.0 (2018), starring Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar. The smaller film would have been sandwiched in between these two big-budget, special effects-heavy features.
The other significant film set to be released in November is Abhishek Kapoor’s Kedarnath (2018) which launches actress Sara Ali Khan opposite Sushant Singh Rajput.
By postponing the release to 2019, producers Fox Star Studios and Dharma Productions are hoping for a favourable launch for the two new actresses, Ananya Pandey, daughter of actor Chunky Pandey, and Tara Sutaria.
Furthermore, Dharma Productions' two big releases for 2019, Kesari and Kalank, are slated to hit the big screens in the first half the year.
Johar’s Student Of The Year (2012) introduced three new faces – Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra. The film released in a less competitive month alongside films like English Vinglish (2012), starring Sridevi, and Aiyyaa (2012), starring Rani Mukerji.
Actor Shroff has already proven himself to be a box office draw with his action films, Heropanti (2014), Baaghi (2016) and Baaghi 2 (2018). It remains to be seen if he can shine in other genres as well.
