Crisscross 'Alo Chhaya' song: When women embrace bitter, lonely life with a dauntless spirit

'Alo Chhaya' song from Birsa Dasgupta’s upcoming film Crisscross has a unique composition by Shubham Shirule. The composition comes from the music repertoire platform JAM8, founded by Pritam.

Singer Armaan Malik does complete justice in bringing out the raw emotions of the lyrics, penned by Smaranjit Chakraborty, who also happens to be writer of the film.

The song narrates the crisis that the film's female protagonists — Ira (Mimi Chakraborty), Meher (Nusrat Jahan), Ms Sen (Joya Ahsan), Rupa (Sohini Sarkar) and Suzy (Priyanka Sarkar) — are facing. However, these five women are brave and do not give up despite the humiliation, loss and challenges they experience on a regular basis.

The lyrics describe that these women are audacious and desperate to live their lives on their own terms. They are also warning that the women's extraordinary zeal for life might destroy them. The lyrics uses images of light and shadow, fire and poison to reveal the intensity of the continuous struggle in the women's lives.

Rupa, a simple housewife, approaches her husband to fulfill her sexual needs but he repeatedly dismisses her. On the other hand, a young man tries to take advantage of her at her in-law's house. Her frustration keeps mounting and eventually one day she sheds her ‘housewife’ avatar and walks in to a pub for drinks.

Ira, on the other hand, seems to be in a troublesome relationship with her boyfriend, who tries to impose his rules on her. It is evident from the visuals that, being a workaholic, she has chosen her work over her relationship.

Meher comes from a humble background. Her happy world comes crashing down when her father suddenly passes away and she takes up the responsibility of supporting her mother and disabled brother. Meher struggles as her dream of becoming an actress collide with her duties towards her family.

Successful Ms Sen is attached to her neighbour's daughter. But the guardian snatches the girl away from her, leaving her lonely again.

Painter Suzy’s partner is a drug addict. She tries to dissuade him and when he gets violent, she thrashes him before their son.

Alo Chhaya stands out as it tells the stories of the all the characters with striking and compact visuals. The fast rhythm of the song goes perfectly well with the sequences and establishes an inescapable web of wrestling with the reality.

Malik effortlessly infuses passion in the fast number and enhances the characters' dauntless spirits throughout the song.

Crisscross is slated to be released on 10 August.
