Meghna Gulzar confirms film on Sam Manekshaw, but not a biopic

After directing one taut espionage film in Raazi (2018), director Meghna Gulzar's next film will be based on the life of India's first Field Marshal, Sam Manekshaw. The director confirmed the report at a book launch of Dinesh Raheja's 101 Haiku in Mumbai on Thursday. 

Interacting with the media at the launch, Meghna said, "I am making a film on the life of Field Marshal of our country Sam Manekshaw but it's not a biopic. My last film Raazi was also not a biopic but with my upcoming film, I want to showcase life of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw." 

Manekshaw has the honour of being the first Indian army officer to be promoted to the rank of Field Marshal. In a career that spanned four decades, Manekshaw oversaw five major conflicts. He led India to victory in the 1971 war against Pakistan, which led to the creation of Bangladesh. 

Incidentally, Meghna's previous film, Raazi, was set in the time leading to the 1971 conflict. Based on the book, Calling Sehmat, the film proved to be a critical and commercial success. 

Earlier in April, there were reports of a sequel being made to the director's Talvar (2015). The film is being produced by Junglee Pictures, although Meghna has not cofirmed her participation in the project. 

At the launch, she said, "It is being made but I am not directing Talvar 2."
