Producer Aanand L Rai and director Mudassar Aziz are back with the sequel to their 2016 romantic dramedy Happy Bhag Jayegi. Titled Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi, Eros International released the much awaited trailer of the sequel today.
The first film saw Happy (Diana Penty) run away and accidentally land in Pakistan. The jilted groom, Daman Singh Bagga (Jimmy Sheirgill) is still chasing Happy and this time he’s looking for her in China. The only problem is, the Happy they find is not the Happy they are looking for. The other Happy in question is a character played by Sonakshi Sinha.
“Amritsar ke har dusre ghar mein, har teesri ladki ka naam hota hain Harpreet – Happy [Every second household in Amritsar has a third child named Harpreet – Happy, and I’m not the Happy you are looking for], says Sinha’s character right in the beginning. It seems like she has been picked up by Adnan Chow, the character of Denzil Smith, who has obviously got hold of the wrong Happy.
The trailer reveals that Bagga was to tie the knot with Happy, but she has gone missing, again. He travels all the way to the Land of the Red Dragon to find her. Director Aziz adds elements of confusion to the sequel, and the ‘Happy’ hunting is now taking place in China.
The trailer is pacey, fun, riddled with Punjabi humour and some of the jokes smack of stereotyping the Chinese.
The thing to watch out in the trailer is that Guddu (Ali Fazal) seems to be asking Sartaj Singh Cheema (Jassi Gill) 'what’s the plan?' We see Happy (Diana Penty) with Guddu. There's also Cheema, Bagga, Afridi (Piyush Mishra) and Sinha as Happy set for a mission. There is a suspense element masked well in the trailer.
Sinha joins the franchise and much of the trailer belongs to her. She also shows promise playing a Punjabi girl. The other notable thing is the limited footage that Penty has in the trailer. Perhaps, it's a deliberate decision by director Aziz.
It’s Sheirgill, Gill and Piyush Mishra who provide the humour quotient. The identity of the young Chinese looking man who speaks in Hindi is not yet known. The film will reveal more.
The Bagga-Afridi banter will be something to look out for. A conversation between a loudmouthed Punjabi and chaste Urdu speaker always makes for a fun conversation as we see in the trailer.
Gill and Sinha are among the news additions to the franchise.
Aziz has churned out a crisp and funny trailer. This one promises to be another romantic entertainer that will appeal to people in India, Pakistan, and the Indian-Pakistani diaspora in China.
The film will be released on 24 August. It will compete with Anil Sharma’s Genius.
