Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster 3 'Lag Jaa Gale' song: Jonita Gandhi's voice saves this passable remake

In the season of remixes and reprisals, it was inevitable that Tigmanshu Dhulia's Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster 3 find some classic to remake and add to their album. That song ends up being 'Lag Jaa Gale', a remake of the iconic Lata Mangeshkar solo from the thriller Woh Kaun Thi? (1964).

Recreated by Rana Mazumder and sung by Jonita Gandhi, the modern version is passable, and decorated with multiple instruments, but does not add much to the original.

While the original score by the great Madan Mohan boasted of minimalism used to enhance the vocal range of Lata Mangeshkar, Mazumder's composition adds multiple instruments. The opening of the remake is almost jarring if you are too fond of the original. However, as Gandhi's voice breaks through, the score takes a backseat. But the song still does not compare to the harmony and serenity of the original.

There are some melodic highs, the addition of the flute and the use of the sarod (played by Krish Trivedi and Sarang Kulkarni, respectively) is a nice touch.

The video is another misstep, which features Gandhi alongside actresses Chitrangda Singh (the producer) and Mahie Gill, who are pretending to record the song in the studio.

From the first look, the song might not have a key part to play in the plot or narrative of the film. However, at the song launch on Monday (23 July), Dhulia had said, "The film's characters are grey but somewhere they are all saying this to each other, 'Aa Lag Ja Gale'. But if they do or don't, you will find out when you watch the film. And that is the essence of Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster they are plotting and struggling only to find that love."

Be that as it may, the song adds nothing to the film other than being a promotional element of its association with Saregama Music. In that, it becomes another average attempt at recreating a classic.
