There is something about road movies and music that they make for a heady combination. Akarsh Khurana's Karwaan (2018) seems to have hit the right formula. The latest song from the film, 'Saansein', is a lyrical beauty that is the perfect song to listen to on a slow drive through the Mumbai monsoon.
The song captures the small surprises, flirtations, and the sweetness of old memories that the three characters experience on the emotional journey. Written, composed, and sung by Prateek Kuhad, it has a slow undulating tune that makes for pleasant hearing. Kuhad manages to amplify it with his blue-sy voice. The song has minimal accompaniments, with the keyboard being the main instrument setting the tone. It works to beautiful effect. The lyrics are also simple, and convey the nostalgic laziness of the road trip effectively.
Karwaan song: Another quirky journey begins in soulful 'Chota Sa Fasana' by Arijit Singh
The song is picturised on Dulquer Salmaan's Avinash and Mithila Palkar's Tanya enjoying some quiet moments, as they battle their own emotional baggages. As they stop over in Kochi, they also come across Kriti Kharbanda's character, who seems to be playing an old flame of Avinash's.
On the other side is the mischievous Irrfan Khan who doesn't seem to be curtailing his romantic instincts even when admitted in the hospital (in the film). As Shaukat plays the flirt with another resident of the hospital, it is not easy to suppress a smile at the actor's antics. The video also captures the struggle of the three characters to find closure to their own pasts. As Tanya finds some peace with her mother (played by Amala Akkineni), the trio seem to share the emotional arc of the song.
