Bidaay Byomkesh trailer promises to explore new shades to sleuth Bakshi

The trailer of Debaloy Bhattacharya’s upcoming thriller Bidaay Byomkesh (2018) was launched on 30 June in the presence of the protagonists Abir Chatterjee, Sohini Sarkar, Bidipta Chakraborty, Arindam Sil and Rupankar Bagchi.

The trailer and the poster of the film has already generated intrigue as it features an aged Byomkesh Bakshi, an image of the iconic sleuth that Bengalis are familiar with. In the film, Chatterjee, who has played the detective in several Byomkesh films by Arindam Sil, will be seen playing a double role. He essays both, the aged Satyanweshi (the seeker of truth) and his grandson Satyaki.

The trailer begins with marking the birth year of Byomkesh and features the names of several Byomkesh stories. Cut to the present year, a stranger enters a police station, claiming to have committed a murder. The inspector calls the aged Bakshi to inform him that the mysterious man is his son DC Abhimanyu Bakshi (Joy Sengupta). Bakshi makes his public appearance after several years along with his daughter-in-law (Bidipta Chakraborty). The more he delves into the disappearance of his son he gets overburdened with emotion and nostalgia of his past escapades.

He hallucinates about his deceased wife Satyabati (Sohini Sarkar) and partner Ajit (Rahul Banerjee) as he struggles to get close to the truth. However, his grandson Satyaki gets increasingly interested in the case and has a realistic approach towards it. When all los hope in the iconic sleuth, Byomkesh rests his faith on his grandson to carry on his legacy. At the end, Satyaki is seen seeking the help of Siri, the virtual assistant of Apple Inc’s iOs, the modern representation of Ajit.

The turmoil of the aged Satyanweshi depicted in the trailer promises to explore new shades to the character. Also, the mystery surrounding Abhimanyu seems puzzling enough to pull the audience. It raises the anticipation to see who eventually solves the case, Byomkesh or Satyaki? Is the audience ready to accept Satyaki as his true descendent?

The story of Bidaay Byomkesh was originally conceived by Bhattacharya with reference to Sharadindu Bandopadhyay’s original creations and characters. The engaging background score has been done by Shubho Pramanik while the music has been composed by Saqi Banerjee. The cinematographer Ramyadip Saha and the editor Sanglap Bhowmick have done a remarkable job in churning out the thrill in the trailer.

The film is scheduled to hit the theatres on 20 July.
