Remove Kaur from title or face consequences: Akali Dal on Sunny Leone's web-series

Sikh political outfit Akali Dal has given a strict warning to remove the word 'Kaur' from the title of actress Sunny Leone's upcoming biopic series, Karenjit Kaur: The Untold Story. Launched on Zee's web platform, Zee5, yesterday. The series focuses on the events in the life of Sunny Leone from her humble beginnings in Canada to her rise as an actress in Hindi cinema.

Speaking to ANI, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, member of the Akali Dal said, "We have no objection with her profession, it’s her personal life. Our only objection is simply that we want them to remove the surname ‘Kaur’ because when she herself had earlier dropped ‘Kaur’ from her name then why is it being used now? We have urged the chairman of Essel Group, Subash Chandra, to immediately remove it or face the consequences."

Kaur is a title often used to describe Sikh women. Sunny Leone, born to Sikh parents as Karenjit Kaur, was brought up in Canada and the United States. The actress's rise as an adult movie star, before arriving in Hindi cinema and establishing herself, is one of the unique factors of her story.

Despite dropping Kaur from her name, Sunny Leone and husband Daniel Weber adopted a girl from Latur last year, and named her Nisha Kaur Weber.

The controversy seems to be the latest to target an upcoming web-series, after the complaint filed by a member of the Congress party against the popular Netflix web-series, Sacred Games.

Karenjit Kaur: The Untold Story also features Raj Arjun, Karanvir Lamba, and Grusha Kapoor among others. The series will consist of 10 episodes detailing the journey of Sunny Leone growing up in Canada, and joining the adult film industry owing to her parents' financial difficulties.
