Actor Diljit Dosanjh's presence and acting ensured that Shaad Ali's biopic on hockey player Sandeep Singh, Soorma, finished with Rs3.25 crore on its opening Friday in theatres. On the other hand, Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Sanju seems to have slowed down its run, but still ensured another Rs4 crore was added to its box office collections, leading to a cool Rs293.83 crore in total.
Diljit Dosanjh on Soorma: I thought I would never be able to do a sports biopic
According to Boxofficeindia.com, Soorma did well in the north Indian sector with a good 50% of its collection coming from the Delhi/Punjab region. The presence of an authentic Punjabi star in Dosanjh, and the setting of the story seems to have found some popular appeal in the region. However, the film is expected to build on its Friday collection over the weekend. The film also features Taapsee Pannu, Angad Bedi and Vijay Raaz.

For now, the Rs3.25 crore earning puts in the same bracket as Neeraj Pandey's Aiyaary (2018) which earned Rs3.23 crore on its first day, with Rani Mukerji's Hichki also earning Rs3.31crore on its first day. Only Hichki was, like Soorma, based on a real life story.
Rajkumar Hirani's Sanju is expected to hit the Rs300-crore mark this week. The film is in its third week, and on Friday added Rs4 crore to its collection. This now puts Sanju's box office earnings at Rs293.83 crore over a period of three weeks.
