Akshay Kumar, who is gearing up for the release of his sports film Gold, took a dig at the English team that crashed out of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia on Wednesday (11 July). English fans were left upset after their team lost 1-2 to Croatia in the semi-final.
While the English team has been lauded for their efforts, it invited criticism for being over confident about reaching the final. English critics and fans had been chanting ‘it's coming home’ since the time England reached the quarter-finals. It was the English who invented the game of football. After the loss to the much superior side in the semi-finals, a couple of Croatian players and their manager had mocked the English critics.
Akshay showed his sense humour as he came up with this cheeky meme on Twitter.
While we see Akshay's 'it’s coming home’ reference, he cleverly used the line to remind his followers about what happened in 1948. Gold is based on India’s first Olympic gold in field hockey as an independent nation. In the 1948 London Olympics, India blanked England 4-0 in the final.
While the English will not be amused, the Indian fans are sure to give Akshay's sense of humour a thumbs up.
Gold will be released on Independence Day, 15 August.
