After appearing as mother to actress Fawzia Mirza in the American film, Signature Move (2017), Shabana Azmi’s next international project, Next of Kin, has her playing mother, yet again, in the British family drama. Her character, the widowed Mrs Shirani, is the mother of Mona (Archie Panjabi) and Kareem (Navin Chowdhury).

The series focuses on Punjabi’s character, Mona, as she finds her family life shattered when her doctor brother is found murdered in Pakistan and more family secrets emerge to tear them apart.

Despite the show tackling global issues of racism and terrorism, there are moments of lightness. Azmi shared a gif on Twitter that has her shaking a leg with actor Jack Davenport, who plays her son-in-law, Guy Harcourt.

The actress was greeted with many compliments for her moves, that included a cheeky comment from choreographer-turned-filmmaker, Farah Khan — “Well I’ve always said you should be the brand ambassador for Bollywood (Hindi film industry) dance”. To which Azmi jokingly replied, “They don’t call you a talent scout for nothing.”

The six-episode family drama begins airing tonight on ITV. Next of Kin is written and created by the husband-and-wife team of Paul Rutman and Natasha Narayan.
