After earning well in the first extended weekend (from 26 to 28 January), Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat seemed to be running strong on its first Monday (29 January), amassing Rs14.25 crore nett, as per figures shared by BoxOfficeIndia.com.

Padmaavat's earnings dropped just 20% on Monday from its earnings on the day of release (24 January) when it bagged an encouraging sum of Rs17.75 crore nett.

The grand total for Padmavaat, starring Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor, currently stands at Rs124 crore. This is a very good earning in less than a week, given that the film has not been released in at least three states and has had trouble with fringe groups opposed to it in other parts of the country.

However, given its production budget of Rs180 crore, Padmaavat needs to keep the momentum going at the box office if it is to make a profit.

Meanwhile, Padmaavat has managed to set an unusual record. While the film is the first one in Hindi to have had a global IMAX 3D release, it has also managed to earn a record $461,000 (Rs29.4 crore) in the opening weekend in IMAX theatres.

"The film's record-breaking IMAX box office in India underscores the growing demand among local audiences for India's biggest and boldest titles to be presented in our ultra-immersive format," said Greg Foster, CEO of IMAX Entertainment and senior executive vice-president, IMAX Corporation.

Padmaavat was also distributed to an additional 42 IMAX theatres in 10 markets outside India, including North America, Australia, the Middle East, Africa and the UK.

The film has a clear run this week as no big film is slated to be released on Friday (2 February). Pad Man and Aiyaary are the next big films to hit the screens on 9 February.
