Box office: Padmaavat earns Rs110 crore in its first weekend

The Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial would have earned much more if it was released in Gujarat, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, too.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s controversial Padmaavat has earned a good number in its first weekend at the box office. The film, starring Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor has bagged Rs110 crore during the Republic Day weekend (from 22 to 28 January), as per figures shared by BoxOfficeIndia.com.

The 3D version of the film hit theatres on Wednesday (24 January) earning Rs4.25 crore. On 25 January the film earned Rs17.75 crore, while on 26 January, Republic Day, the film made Rs31 crore. On 27 January, Saturday, it earned Rs27 crore and on 28 January, Sunday, the film amassed Rs30 crore.

Padmaavat was not released in states like Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Rajasthan even after Supreme Court's order. Needless to say, the film’s total earnings would have been much higher if the film had released in these states. According to BoxOfficeIndia, the figure would have been around Rs145 crore.

This is due to affect the profits as the film is made at a budget of Rs180 crore, approximately.

With no big film slated to be released coming Friday, Padmavaat is expected to cash in in its second week.
