Aamir Khan's ninth home production, Secret Superstar (2017), opened big in China earning $7.5 million (Rs48 crore) on its first day. According to Forbes.com, the film took 25% of the box office earnings on Friday, 19 January.
Other films to be released in China with Secret Superstar are Hollywood films, Wonder (2017) and Ferdinand (2017), Chinese film, A Better Tomorrow 4.
Another Forbes report states that "Secret Superstar should collect more revenue in its first China weekend than it did in its entire run in India."
Advait Chandan's first directorial film follows a young Muslim girl, Insiya, from a conservative family, who dreams of becoming a singer-songwriter. It earned Rs62 crore at the Indian box office.
Khan has a good following in China and is known as 'Uncle Aamir' there. His previous films, Dangal (2016) and 3 Idiots (2009), too did well in the country. According to the film website, Variety.com, Dangal earned $193 million (around Rs1,235 crore). Rajkumar Hirani-directed 3 Idiots is listed as the 12th most popular movie of all time on Douban, a Chinese entertainment site.
Khan, who toured China last year, is expected to visit Beijing from 23 to 26 January to promote the film.
