TV anchors' 'joke' about Suriya's height condemned as unethical

The anchors, in a condescending manner, wondered how Suriya would be able to act with someone as tall as Amitabh Bachchan and suggested that Suriya might have to use a stool.

The statements of two anchors, who made fun of actor Suriya while anchoring a show on a popular television channel, has come in for severe criticism from various quarters.

The women, while talking about Suriya's upcoming projects, discussed the possibility of Amitabh Bachchan being a part of his next film with director KV Anand.

While speaking about this project, the anchors, in a condescending manner, wondered how Suriya would be able to act with someone as tall as Bachchan and suggested that Suriya might have to use a stool.

They also referred to Suriya's previous project with Anushka Shetty, suggesting that the actor was shorter than the actress and had to make an effort to complete the project.

The women anchors' statements have sparked off widespread condemnation.

One of the popular comedians in the Tamil film industry, Karunakaran, came down hard on the channel and the anchors. He said, "wWhen you don't have the skills to run a show, don't be stupid. Please!"

The same point was put across by the industry's most successful producer last year, SR Prabhu.

"Won't people there be bothered about growing brains?" he asked, referring to the television channel.

Actor Vishal, who is also the president of the Tamil Film Producers' Council and the secretary of the South Indian Artistes Association (SIAA), too came down heavily on the statements made by the anchors.

The actor tweeted, "Funny !! ???? Absolutely not.  How unethical in the name of sense of humour. Totally senseless."
