2018 Filmfare Awards nominations announced

Badrinath Ki Dulhania, Bareilly Ki Barfi, Hindi Medium, Secret Superstar and Toilet: Ek Prem Katha will all compete for the best film award.

Sonal Pandya

The nominations for the 63rd Jio Filmfare Awards were announced today and first-time filmmaker Advait Chandan’s Secret Superstar leads the pack with nine nominations. Produced by Aamir Khan, the film was nominated alongside Badrinath Ki Dulhania, Bareilly Ki Barfi, Hindi Medium and Toilet: Ek Prem Katha for best film.

Dharma Productions’ Badrinath Ki Dulhania and BR Studios’ and Junglee Pictures’ Bareilly Ki Barfi were close behind with eight nominations each. Tumhari Sulu, starring Vidya Balan, picked up seven while Hindi Medium, starring Irrfan Khan, picked up five nominations.

As usual, the list isn’t without surprises. Actor Rajkummar Rao, who had an outstanding 2017 with Trapped and Newton, isn’t nominated in the leading actor category but in supporting actor for Bareilly Ki Barfi.

There were some welcome names with Pankaj Tripathi and Seema Pahwa being recognized in the supporting actor categories. Saba Qamar, who won over audiences in Hindi Medium, became the second Pakistani actress to be nominated for her performance in a lead role.

It was also heartening to see a number of female nominees in the technical categories like cinematography and lyrics.

The awards will be held on 20 January 2018 in Mumbai. Karan Johar, Shah Rukh Khan and Parineeti Chopra will co-host the event. The full list of the nominations is below:
