A contempt notice has been issued against Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) chief Prasoon Joshi for clearing Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film Padmaavat, following a complaint by a man in Uttar Pradesh.

Kamta Prasad Singhal filed a complaint against the CBFC chief in the Allahabad high court, which has issued a contempt notice against Joshi, as reported by Press Trust of India. Singhal had earlier filed a Public Interest Litigation calling for a ban on the film.

Admitting Singhal's petition, the Lucknow bench, headed by Justice Mahendra Dayal, issued a contempt notice to Joshi giving him three weeks' time to reply. In his petition, Singhal has alleged that the film promotes the long banned practice of sati (widow jumping in the burning pyre of her husband).

The matter will come up for hearing on 12 February.

As per the Padmaavat legend, Rani Padmavati and the women of Chittorgarh had committed jauhar (self-immolation) as they didn’t want to be held captive by Alauddin Khilji. Jauhar is different from the practice of sati.

Bhansali's Padmaavat is due to be released on 25 January.
