The film will be directed by Soumik Sen, who last directed Gulaab Gang (2014), starring Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla.
Cheat India will be co-produced by Hashmi's Emraan Hashmi Films, in association with T-Series.
In a quote to Pune Mirror, a tabloid, Hashmi said that the film will focus on the education system in the country. "There will be a lot of revelations that look at the glitches in the system. It’s one of the finest scripts I’ve read in the last 10–15 years. I am thrilled to be essaying what I believe will be a landmark role in my filmography," the actor said.
The actor added, "A lot of people in our country go through the same confusion because we don’t get any vocational training which is an absolute must to give direction to a student’s life and career. We spend five years working towards a degree while trying to figure out what to do in life."
Hashmi was last seen playing a bank robber in Milan Luthria's Baadshaho (2017) alongside Ajay Devgn, Ileana D'Cruz, Sanjai Mishra, Esha Gupta and Vidyut Jammwal.
Cheat India is expected to go on the floors in July, and will be released in February 2019.
