Malayalam director Kamal calls Vidya Balan's departure from project 'god's blessings'

Actress Vidya Balan was one of the early choices to play the role of the feminist poet Kamala Das. However, the actress dropped out of the project for reasons she has not divulged yet. The director of the film, Kamal, has now hit out against the actress by saying that her inclusion would have caused 'sexuality' to creep into the role.
In an interview to the Malayalam magazine, Azhimukham, director Kamal said, "Had Vidya played the role, sexuality would have crept in. This was a part even I didn’t pay much attention to."
Das, one of the celebrated poets of Indian English and Malayalam literature, was known for her free expression of feminist ideals and her own sexuality. Balan's departure from the project has ensured that Manju Warrier will be playing the role of the writer in her place.
The News Minute quoted Kamal as saying, "The Madhavikutty I had in mind for Vidya is not the Madhavikutty that Manju has brought to life. It was god’s blessing that Vidya backed out from the movie."
The film, despite facing several controversies, is scheduled to be released on 9 February. Vidya, meanwhile, continues to enjoy the success that came with her last film, Tumhari Sulu (2017).
