Padmavat row: Karni Sena protestors gherao CBFC, detained by Mumbai police

Additional security personnel have been stationed outside the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) in Mumbai after protestors from the Rajput Karni Sena gheraoed the offices to protest against the clearance of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film, Padmavat on Friday. The security has been beefed up outside the offices in Peddar Road, Mumbai. 

Karni Sena president, Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi had, on Thursday, threatened to protest against the CBFC's decision to clear the film with a U/A certification for release. Gogamedi said, "The CBFC which has been running ever since the time of Britishers doesn't know how to work." 

Bhansali's film, based on the 12th century poem, Padmavat, is based on the legend of Padmini, the queen of Chittor. The film ran into severe opposition with the Karni Sena, before being cleared by the CBFC. The board even approached an advisory panel of historians before passing the film with a U/A certification. 

Despite the certification, the film has been banned from screening in Rajasthan, and Himachal Pradesh. The Sena has also announced that it will organise a 'Janata curfew' preventing people from entering theatres to watch the film on its release day. 

Padmavat stars Shahid Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, and Ranveer Singh. It will clash with Akshay Kumar-starrer Pad Man on 25 January.
