The new song 'Ajnabi' from actor Sanjay Suri's film My Birthday Song is about a rendezvous with an ajnabi (stranger). The song is quite likeable, especially for those who love pop rock music.

Those familiar with the band Agnee would be privy to the talent of Mohan Kannan. Most rock singers have a distinct voice. They cannot be melodious like traditional playback singers, but fine rock singers are those who are able to emote the lyrics.

Kannan does that adroitly with 'Ajnabi'. Kannan is a little loose in the mukhda (intro), but he picks up the tempo and mood of the song quickly. He is particular impressive with the high notes. Lyricist Ajay Govind has penned neat lyrics that play true to the visuals.

The word 'ajnabi' immediately brings to mind Kishore Kumar’s classic 'Ek Ajnabee Haseena Se' from  Shakti Samanta’s Ajnabee (1974). There is no comparison between the two songs, whatsoever.

What makes the song appealing is the endearing pop rock score by Govind and Nitin Krishna Menon. Nora Fatehi is yet to display her acting chops, but the Indo-Canadian actress excels in the mushy visuals of the song.

All in all, 'Ajnabi' is a likeable song that may not feature on loop in your playlist, but it definitely worth giving a listen to.

My Birthday Song will be released on 19 January.
