The shooting for Rick Basu’s musical drama Rani has begun and it has already created quite a stir in the Bengali film industry for its novel concept.
The story describes the journey of a female rock band and how they make music their weapon for social and political resistance.
The film features Amrita Chattopadhyay, Shreya Mazumder, Arunima Chaudhuri, Sneha Ghosh, Churni Ganguly and Kamaleshwar Mukherjee in important roles.
Rani (Queen) is also the name of the rock band which is an acronym derived from the names of the members and is suggestive of the power the band exudes against the hurdles and contemporary evil forces.
Kamaleshwar Mukherjee reportedly plays a pivotal character in the rise of the band while Churni Ganguly features as the antagonist.
Basu is hopeful that audiences will connect with the significance of the band and its music in the tussle between positive and negative forces in contemporary society.
The four youngsters, especially Amrita Chattopadhyay, are excited to work with experienced actors Churni Ganguly and Kamaleswar Mukherjee.
The band members come from different social and economic backgrounds and become a joint force connecting through the universal language of music.
Rick Basu, who made his directorial debut with the Paoli Dam-starrer Devi (2017) and made his mark with an unconventional theme, believes his next film will leave a huge impact on Kolkata’s band culture as well.
