The Tamil Film Producers' Council has announced that no new films will be release in the state from 1 March 2018 in protest against the exorbitant rates charged by digital service providers.
In a statement, the council said the digital service providers had been charging exorbitant rates for their services for many years and turned a deaf ear to repeated requests for a reduction.
The council said that as the digital service providers had not heeded these pleas, made through letters and in person, the producers' council of the South Indian film industries had decided not to release any films in any of their theatres until their demand is met.
The council said that at a recent meeting of members, it was decided that the Tamil Film Producers' Council should support the strike called by their counterparts in other states. An alternative to digital service providers was also discussed at the meeting.
